I decided to put my theory into practice and gathered up a range of different pieces from several Crate Paper collections to use with my Cool Kid paper pad. I began by pulling out a few papers that picked up some of the colours in the photo, then looked for other papers that would work with the ones I had selected and shuffled the patterns around the page to give me an idea of how each pattern worked with the one next to it. I usually mix small and large patterns and often like to add a few subtle designs that won't compete with the more bold graphic patterns, and it is the patterns as much as the colours that determine where each layer will be placed.
Next comes my favourite part of every layout... the embellishments! When selecting each piece I look at how it will enhance the look of the page but also if it will help to tell the overall story. I often vary the type embellishments used to give the page more interest and each piece usually has a paper partner - meaning that it will match at least one of the paper layers through either colour or pattern.
